Rapid Spanning Tree ( IEEE 802.1w )

Ways that RSTP is like STP

  • elects root switches using the same parameters and tiebreakers
  • elects a root port and a non root port
  • elects designated ports on each lan segment
  • places ports in forwarding or blocking states. However RSTP calls the blocking state discarding
STP convergence is 50 seconds by default RSTP was invented to reduce that convergence time

RSTP convergence time is less than 10 seconds

RSTP Link and Edge Types

  • Link-type point-to-point (connection type between two devices: switch to switch )
  • Link-type shared ( connections between hubs and a device )
  • Edge-type (connection between two devices on the outside of a network: switch to host )
