Point to Point Authentication Lab PAP and CHAP

CHAP configuration and verification process

  1. configure the router's hostnames
  2. configure the name of the other routers and the shared secret password
  3. enable CHAP on the interfaces on each router
CHAP configuration

Router 1

router#configuration terminal
router(config)#hostname R1
R1(config)#username R2 password cisco
R1(config)#interface serial 0/1
R1(config-if)#encapsulation ppp
R1(config-if)#ppp authentication chap

Router 2

router#configuration terminal
router(config)#hostname R2
R2(config)#username R1 password cisco
R2(config)#interface serial 0/0
R2(config-if)#encapsulation ppp
R2(config-if)#ppp authentication chap

The only confusing part of this config is that the users names are reflective of the opposite site of the Chap connection. Notice R1's username is R2 and R2's username is R1.
